Samui: Only small islands of gay life on that island

Report from a wonderful and charming posting called gay Koh Samui

By gay Suzy Size who knows everything about gay Koh Samui

Koh Samui was always more for backpackers, families and straight couples than for flamboyant queens like thee and me plus their at least as flamboyant entourage and this is still so today. Gay life on Koh Samui was always slow. But even the very first time I went there in about 1994 - and I stayed in a place on sleepy Maenam Beach - I and my German travelling companion entered a (then) French Restaurant in what we considered to be the centre of the village . . . and there it was: a small island of gay Koh Samui life. We had hit the jackpot the very first day! My friend did not spend his night alone and neither did I have to console myself with my five fingered friend that night or the ones that followed in gay Koh Samui. By the way: no money changed hands then during those gay Koh Samui nights (admittedly I was in better shape in those long-lost days). That is the advantage of places like Koh Samui, they are less commercial when it comes to gay sex (and you are, with luck, more prone to find your personal for ever and a day prince charming) but there are commercial sections too, nowadays, for old tarts like moi in gay Koh Samui or shortly: gay Samui.

I stayed in Chaweng beach this time (where gay and non gay Koh Samui nightlife in general is located) at a small, central place that I choose for convenience of location (and no security checks at night that might frighten off a shy companion) but I cannot recommend it because of their horrible beds. Hotels in general are far more expensive on Samui than elsewhere in the kingdom, which applies to restaurants as well. Life is expensive on gay Koh Samui, everything has to be brought in (mainly by Bangkok Airways), including most of the gay bar boys who here can do what they cannot do in their more Northern or Southern points of origin.

Just cruising up and down Chaweng main road your no doubt discerning eye will see where the gay Koh Samui action is. Start your night at the Prego Italian al fresco Restaurant opposite the Amari Hotel. This is an excellent but relaxed restaurant with great atmosphere and wonderful food. It is a gay friendly place of Koh Samui. Not cheap, but good value for money. In high season each of the one hundred seats is sold three times a night, which is a tremendous success (and which speaks for itself). So make a reservation early if you want to enjoy gay Koh Samui night life afterwards.

Wandering south you will reach Starbucks on your right after about 10 minutes. Behind this American Coffee chain there are several Koh Samui gay bars that you just cannot miss. The gay boy that forced me to off him in this gay Koh Samui bar at one of them was sweet and fresh, even though not as versatile as I had hoped. The Bar takes 300 Baht and he was compensated for the short time he gave me with the 1000 Baht that is usual in gay Koh Samui for professional services of this kind. But Oh! Fickle youth, only the next afternoon I saw him wandering around with a complete stranger, an extremely ugly Farang of course! Well, my devastation was of very short duration, gay whores are gay whores after all, and life must go on in Koh Samui. And it really did.

When you continue your gay Koh Samui journey southward, just before Pizza Hut you will see one of those well known Rainbow flags at the corner. Go into the Soi and on your right you'll find a little gay bar. No board gives you the name but it is called Fah Samui and, as was explained to me, it belongs to the small massage place next door (which seems to be a travel agency as well and they could do customised flower arrangements and decorations too if you should be in urgent need of such a service during your stay on gay Koh Samui). I only had a Heineken and chatted with the friendly guys for a while. After all, I was on a mission to discover Gay Koh Samui for your benefit. Go on gay Suzy Size, shape up, be ready for more of gay Samui!

When I was wandering in other parts of the place the day before (not the designated gay areas of Samui), a rather obvious (but good looking) young man on a motorcycle smiled at me, turned around, passed me and did that several times. Finally he stopped and offered me a free ride to wherever I wanted to go. He really delivered on his promise and since he had told me he worked in some Koh Samui gay bar near Green Mango Disco I kept an eye out for him that night as I wandered by. I could not find the gay place and do therefore not expect to meet the man again this life, for better or worse, seems to be just my karma. So cruel can gay life on Samui be.

Further on, just before Tops, enter the soi on your left and you will find gay Star Club, which has one of those dreaded Cabaret or Drag Shows that they put on for the benefit of the performers in gay Koh Samui. I found two more: Amsterdam (opposite the Trade Wind Cottages) and The G Bar (opposite Central Hotel, in Soi Colibri). I watched all three gay Koh Samui drag shows and was surprised how many straight couples and kids watched too. If you want to get that nostalgic feeling on how it is, to be in a minority position, just go to gay Samui and watch a Drag Show. Before and after the shows it is easy to make contact but during the Show you might feel ignored and head for the exit.

Ruby Red Lounge turned out be a nicely decorated Bar with friendly service but, since I was the only guest that night, I might not return there. Gay Koh Samui can be a bit boring at times.

For cruising: Try the Reggae or Green Mango Discos or Lotus Center on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. That is about all I discovered about gay Koh Samui.
